iPhone 12 Pro-Specs & Review

Apple is calling all kind of shots and letting the consumers dish it out by having a whole list of options to choose from. We already reviewed the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12, here we have the next in the iPhone 12 series line the iPhone 12 Pro. There are’nt as many upgrades from the iPhone 12 but if you were to compared it to the iPhone 11 then you will definitely have a list of upgrades.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are the same in most aspects, the only difference/upgrade there is when it comes to the cameras. Compared to the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro has a proper telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom, a LiDAR Scanner for AR applications and low-light focusing, and it can take portrait shots with Night mode. The major differences end just about here.

When it comes to the entire iPhone 12 series, what really stands out for me is the design (This does not include the notch, it’s definitely not a pretty sight). It’s almost unparalleled!

The front, which is a 6.1″ Super Retina XDR OLED display with 1,170 x 2,532 resolution, glass has what apple is calling Ceramic Shield glass, which is still made by Corning but with added microscopic ceramic crystals. Unfortunately, there is no high screen refresh rate and this is uniform on all the iPhone 12 series phones. The glass is more shatter and scratch resistant. The rear panel is made of flat frosted glass.

Unlike the iPhone 12, the rear of the iPhone 12 Pro is a frosted panel that has a glossy camera square. Similarly, with the new flat frame, too – it is an amazing shiny stainless steel instead of the lighter and frosted aluminum chassis found on the iPhone 12.

Found on the back is a square camera bump that houses the three 12MP cameras- The primary, ultrawide, and telephoto. The LiDAR scanner(this measures distances by firing laser beams and measuring their reflections with a dedicated sensor. This way, the phone can make a super accurate 3D representation of an object and later place it virtually anywhere, on top of that you can use it to measure distance too) and the dual-LED flash are in here, too.

The SIM tray has been moved to the left alongside the flat volume keys and silencer switch. The Power key is on the right, while the bottom has the Lighting port, mouthpiece and the other stereo speaker. The iPhone 12 Pro is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance, but the new design has allowed Apple to enhance its water protection even further. Now, the iPhones are promised to survive in 6m-deep water for 30 minutes. This and the Ceramic Shield make the 12th generation one of the most durable non-rugged smartphones out there.

The entire iPhone 12 series boots with the latest iOS 14.1 and is powered by the new Apple A14 Bionic chip. It comes with the Qualcomm’s X55 5G modem. It is a 5nm chipset that has a six-core processor consisting of 2 big Firestorm cores clocked at 3.1GHz and 4 small icestorm cores working at 1.8GHz with TurboBoost capability to go 3.1GHz when necessary. Powering the graphics is a 4-core Apple GPU. Included is the new 16-core NPU for machine learning that is said to bring a 70% increase in AI performance. Supporting these, is 6GB of RAM and three storage option of 128GB/256GB/512GB.

The iPhone 12 Pro packs a similar camera setup as that of the iPhone 11 Pro i.e. three 12MP cameras on the back and a 12MP selfie camera imbeded in the notch. On the other hand, the LiDAR scanner assists the autofocus and helps take portraits with realistic defocused background. The SL 3D scanner for Face ID assists the Portrait mode in selfies, too.

The primary camera has a 12MP sensor with 1.4µm large pixels and a 26mm wide lens. It has a bright f/1.6 aperture and features Optical Image Stabilization as well as dual pixel autofocus. The second 12MP camera has smaller 1.0µm pixels and 13mm f/2.4 lens for ultrawide photos.

It has a fixed focus and has no OIS. The third and last camera on the rear is a 12MP camera with 1.0µm pixels and 52mm f/2.0 lens for 2x optical zoom. This one offers OIS and supports PDAF. On the front, is the 12MP selfie camera with 1.0µm pixels and a 23mm f/2.2 lens with fixed focus. All four cameras support up to 4K@60fps video capturing with Cinematic Stabilization (EIS, EIS+OIS) and Expanded Dynamic Range.

Powering the iPhone 12 Pro is the same battery as that which powers the regular iPhone 12. The phone supports fast wired and wireless charging, you will have to purchase the charger separately as these phones are shipped without a charger. The iPhone 12 Pro is a well-rounded Smartphone. The most notable differences between the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 are in the camera department.

But if these are minor differences to you, I would suggest you opt for the regular iPhone 12 and save a few dollars and buy the charger instead. However, if that’s not the case for you and the camera differences play a big role, feel free and go for the Pro version or better yet stick to the iPhone 11 Pro. If you really need to go all out and have the best of what Apple is offering in the year 2020 then there is the iPhone 12 Pro Max that goes for 100 Euros more over the iPhone 12 Pro.
